Mt Hood, Timberline Lodge

Timberline Lodge is an integral part of American heritage. In keeping with the spirit of our pioneer forefathers, the area’s native people, and the mountain’s bounty of wild flora and fauna, the lodge and ski area were built with the rugged spirit of individualism and yet, as a product of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal policies, it was also born out of a spirit of cooperation and teamwork. Timberline Lodge was born during the throes of the Great Depression. It was a “make work project” during a severely idled national economy. It was, and is still today, a symbol of hope and purpose, representing the notion that when government works closely with the people, it can truly serve the common good and provide solutions to some of society’s biggest problems. Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the lodge in 1937 as a “testament to the workers on the rolls of the Works Progress Administration.” Nearly 75 years later, Timberline is that, and much more. Timberline is where historic preservation, stewardship, recreation, and hospitality come together to provide an unforgettable experience.

On the Coast: Astoria

The area of Astoria is a nationally significant historic region at the western end of the Lewis & Clark Trail. Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies; a place that takes visitors back to simpler times, its architecture dominated by hundreds of Victorian homes clinging to steep wooded hillsides and with a revitalized 1920s era downtown; all set against a backdrop of tremendous natural beauty in the temperate rain forest at the mouth of the Columbia River. Visitors have an opportunity to escape into an appealing, intriguing past.

On the Coast: Canon Beach

The City of Cannon Beach is located on the Pacific Northwest Coast of Oregon, 80 miles west of Portland and 25 miles south of Astoria, Cannon Beach is surrounded by the rugged natural beauty of forests, ocean beaches, and rivers. Only four miles in length, and with a population of 1,695, Cannon Beach is a popular and picturesque resort area, playing host to an estimated over 750,000 visitors annually.

Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail

From the Plains to the Pacific Between May 1804 and September 1806, 31 men, one woman, and a baby traveled from the plains of the Midwest to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery. In their search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean, they opened a window onto the west for the young United States.
